 Unnamed Heroes

I am just a piece of litter,
I'm just lying here, all alone,
carelessly tossed aside by a ressoT,
one of many seeds, thoughtlessly sown.

And what is to become of me?
I lay here, pondering my thoughts
because as I wallow, still unloved,
I do feel rather, well, out of sorts.

As I know my friends have all been recycled,
yes, they do indeed get to live another day,
but me, in the mud, the best I can hope for?
Well, probably, I'll simply be washed away.

And then I'll end up in the oceans,
maybe I'll get as far as the Atlantic Sea,
or maybe I'll get eaten by a seal, or a whale,
just who knows what sad story is waiting for me?

But who's that coming down the road?
Yes, I can see one, two, no there's a crowd,
and they do look resplendent in their yellow,
yes, they stand out, really quite Proud.

And thank goodness for them, I say,
because yes, I can again rejoin my friends,
and yes, I will live happily ever after, but,
hang on, that's not where this story ends.

Because where would we be without those 'Prouds?
(and there's a collective you've never heard before),
but seriously, without them, we'd be in a mess,
and it'd probably stay that way, for evermore.

But there's Mike, Val, Pip (and Allen), and
so many more, too many to individually name,
but they are the ones who turn out, pick after pick,
never seeking recognition, fortune or fame.

Yep, they do it for the love of the island,
and I really do want to say that out loud,
because without those unnamed heroes, we'd
be nothing, we certainly wouldn't, be Proud.

WE THANK YOU.
