What we do.
We litter pick the island 14 times per year and after some local events. For example, one of these is to pick from the Peldon Rose to the Strood. We do this at high spring tide when the traffic stops to keep us safe.
What we have done.
Established in March 2018
Over the time we have removed around 2340 bags of litter from the Island’s environment. Yes, we have cleared up after over 100,000 separate littering incidents (How many fines have been made in that time?)
Unexpected litter we have found.
My Bizarre find was in a hedge on East Road, East Mersea on a bend outside a cottage,
2 copies of Men only magazine dating from 1962 and1964, (my wife made me throw them away without even a scan read) with my fragile medical condition she thought this may create a system overload or worse thoughts of a youth beyond my abilities, lol.
We also find many items of clothing along East Mersea beaches, it makes you wonder
what goes on after dark down there.
Others include,
Car Door, large but empty Viagra box, 5 empty miniature vodka bottles one after another,
Knickers, disposable nappy, condom.
Social side of Proud.
We meet after each litter pick back at the Victory for coffee / Teas and a free raffle. At our Christmas pick we round off the morning pick with mulled wine and mince pies.
We also hold some very well attended social evenings for a meal, drinks, and conversation.
In the Summer we hold a BBQ and have lots of fun.
Proud is organised by only a handful of committee members.
We could do with some more help on the team or even consider joining us at some of the Litter picks. Register at “proudofmersea.com” or find us onFacebook
We are not a charity as income is too low to qualify meaning we must pay VAT on everything we buy. We provide the picking kit which costs us about £45 each person
